Rasteira is a great and effective takedown when done correctly.
There are many different ways to execute this move from a variety of stances.
For the purposes of this blog article I will discuss rasteira that originates from base.
1. When you find yourself in base remember to keep your back flat and your knees a little bit wider than shoulder width apart.
2. As you begin the rasteira, twist your hips and keep your arms up to protect yourself.
3. Hook your flexed foot behind the opposite person's lead foot.
Coach's Tip: Keep your eyes focused in the direction you are pulling your hips. By looking away from the other person momentarily and lifting your chest in that direction you'll be able to pull the rasteira keeping your hips in the right position.
4. Keeping your foot flexed and your leg straight, pull your hips through (away from the other person.)
Coach's Tip: Be sure to keep your pivot foot far enough from your hooked foot to allow for the full extension and pull through of the rasteira. It is a common mistake to step in too close.
5. Keep your arms up and stay light on your feet as you turn back through from the rasteira.
