What is Capoeira?
Martial Arts. Movement. Strength. Skill.
Capoeira is a dynamic Brazilian martial art built around striking, evasive movement, strategy, agility, and athleticism.
Unlike martial arts that rely primarily on a fixed fighting stance, Capoeira emphasizes continuous movement. Practitioners learn to attack, evade, change levels, control distance, create angles, and respond to an opponent in real time.
The result is a martial art that challenges your strength, endurance, coordination, mobility, balance, and ability to think while you move.
At The Capoeira Forge, we teach Capoeira in Sacramento to beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
No previous martial arts experience is required.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF MARTIAL ART
Capoeira doesn't look like most martial arts—and it doesn't train like most martial arts.
STRIKING
Capoeira includes an extensive system of kicks and other attacks. Students learn striking mechanics, distance, timing, accuracy, control, and how techniques can be combined with movement.
EVASION
Instead of simply standing in place and blocking an attack, Capoeira frequently uses evasive movement.
You'll learn to move away from attacks while maintaining your position and creating opportunities to counter.
MOVEMENT
Capoeira develops the ability to move comfortably in almost any direction.
You'll transition between standing and ground positions while developing balance, mobility, agility, coordination, and body control.
STRATEGY
Capoeira isn't simply about performing techniques.
You have to learn how to use them against another moving person.
Timing, distance, deception, positioning, anticipation, and improvisation all become increasingly important as your skills develop.
ACROBATICS
Capoeira can also incorporate cartwheels, inversions, hand-supported movements, and acrobatics.
You don't need to know how to do any of them before starting.
These skills are developed progressively as your strength, mobility, coordination, and confidence improve.

THE GINGA
The Foundation of Capoeira
Watch Capoeira for the first time and you'll immediately notice something different: practitioners rarely stand still.
That's because of the ginga.
The ginga is the fundamental movement from which much of Capoeira develops. Instead of remaining in a fixed fighting stance, you continually shift your weight, position, and angle.
From the ginga, you can attack, evade, change direction, create distance, close distance, or disguise what you're going to do next.
Learning the ginga is one of the first steps in Capoeira—and something you'll continue refining throughout your training.

CAPOEIRA IS INTERACTIVE
Learning individual techniques is only the beginning.
Eventually, you have to use them while another person is moving, attacking, evading, and responding to you.
That's where Capoeira becomes particularly challenging.
You learn to read movement, recognize opportunities, disguise your intentions, control distance, react, improvise, and make decisions in real time.
It's physical problem-solving.
There isn't always a predetermined combination or expected response.
You have to adapt.
IS CAPOEIRA A DANCE OR A MARTIAL ART?
Capoeira is a martial art.
Its flowing movement and acrobatics can make Capoeira look very different from conventional striking arts, particularly to someone seeing it for the first time.
But the movements have martial applications.
Kicks have targets.
Evasions avoid attacks.
Movement changes distance and positioning.
Feints disguise intentions.
Timing creates openings.
Strategy determines how those tools are used.
Capoeira simply approaches fighting and movement differently than many other martial arts.

CAPOEIRA IS A FULL-BODY WORKOUT
One of the biggest benefits of Capoeira is that fitness isn't separated from skill development.
You're building fitness while learning how to move.
Capoeira training can improve:
• Cardiovascular endurance
• Core strength
• Leg strength
• Upper-body strength
• Flexibility and mobility
• Balance
• Agility
• Coordination
• Explosive movement
• Body awareness
Instead of spending an hour repeating exercises just for the sake of exercising, you're developing physical abilities that allow you to perform increasingly challenging skills.

YOU DON'T NEED TO BE ATHLETIC TO START
That's what training is for.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Capoeira is that you need to already be flexible, strong, or acrobatic.
You don't.
You don't need to know how to cartwheel.
You don't need to be flexible.
You don't need martial arts experience.
You don't need to be in great shape.
We start with fundamentals and build from there.
Your strength, mobility, endurance, coordination, and movement abilities develop through consistent training.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Beginning Capoeira training introduces you to a broad range of physical and martial skills.
GINGA
Develop the fundamental movement that connects Capoeira's attacks, evasions, and transitions.
KICKS
Learn proper mechanics, control, targeting, distance, and application of Capoeira's striking techniques.
EVASIONS
Learn how to avoid attacks through movement while maintaining your ability to respond.
FOOTWORK & POSITIONING
Develop your ability to create angles, manage distance, and move efficiently around another person.
GROUND MOVEMENT
Learn to transition between standing and lower positions while maintaining balance, awareness, and control.
COMBINATIONS
Connect movements, kicks, evasions, and transitions into increasingly complex sequences.
ACROBATICS
Develop cartwheels, inversions, and more advanced movements progressively as your physical abilities improve.
APPLICATION
Learn how to use your skills while interacting with another moving person rather than simply practicing techniques in isolation.

CAPOEIRA FOR FITNESS
You don't have to become an advanced martial artist to benefit from Capoeira.
Many people start because they're simply looking for a workout that's more interesting than going to the gym.
Capoeira combines elements of:
-
Cardio training
-
Strength and conditioning
-
Mobility
-
Bodyweight training
-
Agility
-
Balance
-
Coordination
-
Explosive movement
And because you're continually learning new skills, there is always another challenge to work toward.
CAPOEIRA FOR BEGINNERS
Your first Capoeira class isn't going to look like the advanced Capoeira videos you've seen online.
That's intentional.
Beginners start with fundamental movement, basic kicks, evasions, positioning, and introductory combinations.
As your abilities improve, we gradually introduce more complex movements.
You progress from where you are—not from where someone else is.
WHY TRAIN CAPOEIRA?
Because it's difficult to get bored.
There is always another kick to improve.
Another movement to learn.
Another combination to connect.
Another physical challenge to overcome.
Another opponent to figure out.
As your technique improves, your understanding of the martial art changes with it.
Capoeira can challenge a complete beginner on their first day and still challenge an experienced practitioner decades later.
